Very soon. Gonna secure funding thru my bank first, then hope to get something new-to-me on Tuesday.
Nervous as fuck, as this is my one and only car. It has to commute daily, handle the bipolar Texas weather, and serve as the vacation & road trip rig. Oh, and be perfectly reliable and get 1,000 mpg. For, preferably, less than $10k. Oppo-cred likely will be low.
Wish me luck, fellas.

Isn’t Miata always the answer?

You won me over with securing financing with the bank you hold an account with prior to purchasing a vehicle. Nice!

I once took out the biggest loan I could get just to put it all into a live auction bid at a seizure auction on an IS300. I had to really convince the bank that was what I was going to do with the money, even had to show them the auction car previews on the internet, and they even looked at car prices on the internet to see if it was appropriate lol. I got the car for $10K and sold it 3 years later for $10k.

“Alright kids, hop in!”
“But Dad, there are only two-”
Miata engine revs high as Dad and Mom drive off, laughing.
End scene.

Oof. Need it that big huh? Good pick though, will run forever.
Try and find one without the third row. Good haggle point, and it’s pretty useless for sitting back there anyway. I’d look into narrower wheels/tires too, despite it being a hybrid it’s not super great on fuel. The RAV4 is marginally better at the cost of being significantly less useful.

In researching the Highlander hybrid, I realized that its expected city/highway mileages are the reverse of most other cars, in that it gets better city mileage (stop and go) than highway, where you go long durations without braking to recharge the hybrid battery. That said, I’ll probably be better off with the gas version, since my drive is mostly highway.
As to size, I’ll put it this way: we’re moving up from a Jeep Patriot, which is feeling cramped as my kids are getting bigger, and we’ll soon have a mid-sized doggo in the near future, who will likely accompany us on future road trips.

May be worth looking at a Honda Pilot then as well? They feel a little bigger, roughly same mileage?

I have looked into those. I feel they’re on-par with the Highlander for what we need. Plus, I’m oddly intrigued by a Honda with a column shift.
